What is RPM?

Revenue per mille — total revenue divided by total units (views, pageviews, sessions, downloads, or opens), multiplied by 1,000. It tells you what every 1,000 units of audience are worth.

RPM vs. CPM — what's the difference?

CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 impressions, before the platform's cut. RPM is what you actually receive per 1,000 views, across every revenue source, not just ads. RPM is almost always lower.

Why does RPM vary so much between platforms?

Revenue share, ad formats, audience geography, content niche, and seasonality all move it. A finance channel can out-earn an entertainment channel 10x at the same view count.

Is a higher RPM always better?

Not on its own. Some networks measure RPM on sessions instead of pageviews, or fold in memberships and tips — check what's actually in the denominator before comparing two numbers.
